Birthday Reflections

tangled - birthday

Today is my birthday and honestly I’ve been dreading it all summer. Whenever people would kindly remind me that my birthday was coming up, I would either begrudgingly agree or completely disagree and say I didn’t know what they were talking about.

I used to enjoy celebrating my birthday, but those were back in the carefree days of my youth (here I go talking like I’m ancient). Honestly, I think once you hit a certain age, it’s just not the same. No offense to those people who are my age or older that still celebrate their birthdays like there’s no tomorrow – I wish I shared the same sentiment! Maybe this year seems worse because it’s a milestone birthday for me. That compounded with the fact that I still feel a bit (or a lot somedays) lost is making me really feel that the days and years are ticking by just a bit too fast for my liking.

Every year, I tell myself that I’m going to make it a good year and make changes. And I guess in hindsight this past year hasn’t been without its accomplishments. I survived another work (school) year, launched my YouTube channel as a little side project, have gained blog followers, and my Instagram currently has over 2,000 followers! I guess it’s easy to forget how far you’ve come in a year when you’re so busy.

I’ve also made a conscious decision to let go of some people in my life. Not exactly cutting people out, but not going out of my way to do things for them or see them. I am one of those people who will go to great lengths for other people, but I rarely see anything in return (from certain people) and it’s time for me to put myself first. Not to continue this debbie downer rant, but I have friends who probably consider themselves (the feeling may not be mutual here) good friends with me but if you asked them what the name of my blog is they couldn’t tell you. Which reminds me of my blog buddy, Shauna, of Rae of Sparkles who wrote a blog post last year about what the 2 categories friends of bloggers fall into. So I guess the big takeaway for me this year (although pretty late into this year) has been to just do me.

With all that being said, I am thankful for another year and I look forward to what this year will bring. I’m spending the day shopping with my mom (have to take advantage of those birthday coupons!) and going out to dinner with my family. This weekend I’ll be doing something with a few friends, weather permitting. I will continue to aspire to make this year better than the last and to leave a little sparkle wherever I go!
