Book Review: Same Time Next Year

I wanted to fit in Same Time Next Year by Tessa Bailey before New Year’s and I was able to since it’s a novella! I finished it a few days ago and enjoyed this marriage of convenience sports romance.

The novel is a dual POV and follows Britta and Sumner. Britta is a bartender and her half-brother plays for a local hockey club and the bar is always filled with hockey players. One of them is Sumner Mayfield, a teammate of her brother’s and her friend. Britta thinks Sumner is incredibly good looking and always feel safe with him around, like he’s watching out for her. Sumner has been in love with Britta since the moment he met her, but thinks he doesn’t stand a chance. When Sumner, a Canadian, finds out his visa is expiring, his teammates come up with the idea of him and Britta getting married so he can stay in the country since he is so close to being called up to the professional league. Britta agrees which comes as a huge shock to Sumner, but she agrees under the condition that this is just her helping him out as a friend and it’s like a business transaction and in one year once all his paperwork is done they will “break up”. But will spending time together make Britta realize how great Sumner is? Can Sumner win Britta over?

This was a great novella. I always love the marriage of convenience trope because it’s fun to watch the two fall in love, even if it’s reluctantly. Britta and Sumner were great characters, but sometimes I wanted to shake Britta for being so stubborn about allowing herself to feel something for Sumner because he was so great!

Read this if you want a spicy romcom novella with the marriage of convenience, slow burn, friends to lovers tropes.
