Book Review: You Said I Was Your Favorite

We’re one day closer to Friday! This has been a busy week for me both at work and at home so I’ve been trying to fit in as much reading as I can whenever I have some down time. A few days ago I finished reading You Said I Was Your Favorite the 5th book in the Lancaster Prep series by Monica Murphy.

This one follows Arch Lancaster (cousin to Crew, Whit, etc.) and Daisy Albright. Arch is extremely bright, just like most of the other Lancasters, and didn’t have plans to spend senior year at Lancaster. With enough credits to graduate early, he thought his parents would let him do that but they said no. So he’s back at Lancaster for one more year. And while he’s there, he wants to maintain his #1 in the class status. But the classmate who has been sort of his academic rival for the past few years just might take his spot. Daisy Albright is shy, hard working, doesn’t really have friends, and her dad is the groundskeeper at Lancaster Prep. She doesn’t think someone like Arch even knows she exists, but he does.

When Arch gets in trouble and his punishment is working in the administrative office of the school every 2nd period for the year alongside Daisy who works there during her free period, the two academic rivals and opposites have to spend more time together. Soon the two rivals who originally couldn’t stand spending time together only want to see each other.

I really liked this novel and loved Arch and Daisy. This was definitely the least drama-ful of the Lancaster series and while Arch had his moments he was the least jerk-y of the Lancaster men. The other books tend to be a little more dramatic and even a bit dark with the issues the characters face i.e. emotional and physical abuse, personal identity growing pains/issues etc. The conflict in You Said I Was Your Favorite are more “normal” – mainly that they have different backgrounds and it causes issues with disapproving parents. It was a nice change of pace to not have a dark, dramatic conflict but that also means it ended up being a little less interesting/gripping. Nonetheless, I still really liked the book and loved the characters.

Read this if you want a spicy prep school romance with the enemies/rivals to lovers trope.
