Book Review: Slaying the Vampire Conqueror

I love Carissa Broadbent’s Crowns of Nyaxia series so when I found out a few months ago that she has a book in the Mortal Enemies to Monster Lovers multi-author collection I knew I had to read it. Slaying the Vampire Conqueror is set in the same world as the Crowns of Nyaxia series.

The novel follows Sylina and Atrius. Sylina is human and after losing her family, she is taken in at the age of 10 by the Arachessen, a cult of the Goddess of fate. She had to sacrifice her freedom and her eyes for the Arachessen and in return she was given a sisterhood and was trained to be an assassin.

Now grown up, Sylina and the Arachessen learn that an army of vampires led by Atrius from the House of Blood are making their way across human city states and it looks like they are heading toward the king to kill him. The Arachessen also don’t like the tyrant king, but they don’t want these vampires on their shores either.

Sylina is tasked with infiltrating Atrius’ army, gaining his trust and confidence, and then kill him. But, the more Sylina gets to know Atrius the more she questions everything and the more he doesn’t seem like the bad guy she always thought he was.

I really loved this book and Sylina and Atrius. It was a deliciously satisfying slow burn, enemies to lovers. The storyline was so interesting, but it did move a bit slow especially the first half. I think that the characters and storyline made up for the slow parts.

This is technically a standalone, but Carissa Broadbent has said that Sylina and Atrius will play an important role in future Crowns of Nyaxia books. I’m assuming their roles might be like her novella Six Scorched Roses characters – Lilith and Vale – who are in The Ashes & the Star-Cursed King so I’m looking forward to being reunited with them!

Read this if you want a spicy fantasy romance with the slow burn and enemies to lovers tropes.
