Ideas For A Garage Makeover

What do you think about your garage? Is it a bit of a forgotten area in your home? Don’t worry if that’s the case – it’s very often like that, and many people won’t think about their garages at all, other than to store things in there that very rarely get used. The fact is that a garage has become a bit of a catch-all for everything from old tools to Christmas decorations, mainly because it’s hard to fit modern cars into older garages, so they can’t always be used for their original purpose. But that doesn’t mean the garage can’t be used for something, and with a bit of effort and a plan for a good makeover, you might just find that it’s a massively useful area of your home. With that in mind, keep reading to get some great ideas for a garage makeover.

Declutter

The first step in any garage makeover (or any home makeover in general, come to that) is to tackle the clutter which is sure to have built up over the years – over time stuff just tends to pile up and before you know it, you’ve got a disorganized mess in front of you. Well, if you want to make use of your garage, that disorganized mess has to go.

Start by taking everything out of the garage completely and sorting it into three piles – keep, donate or sell, and toss out. And be honest with yourself – if you haven’t used something in the past year or so, it’s probably time to let it go. It’s hard, but it’s necessary if you want to have a useful garage space. Once you’ve got rid of everything you don’t need, you’ll have a much better idea of the space you’re working with and how much you really need to store, which is a fantastic first step, and probably the hardest one to take.

Use Your Vertical Space

Garages often have quite limited floor space, so that’s why it’s so important to use the walls and even the ceiling to store things – it’ll free up space and mean everything is neat and tidy, so it’s a win-win. Why not install some wall-mounted shelves or cabinets or put some boards across the joists in the ceiling and use that for storage? For tools you could have a pegboard so you not only know where everything is and it all has a home, but you can also get to it whenever you want to, making the area safe and user-friendly.

How you do all this does depend on what you want to use the garage for, so you’ll need to have at least a vague idea of what you want the end result to be. For example, if you’re just tidying up the space or you want to use it as a workroom, you might not need to do all that much to make it look pretty, but if you’re planning to turn the garage into a study, a home gym, or even a home cinema, for example, you might need storage that hides your stuff to keep things looking good. Think ahead and you’ll be able to make the right choice.

Upgrade The Garage Door

The garage door is sure to be the most visible part of your garage from the outside – there’s really nothing else to look at, is there? – and upgrading it can have a big impact on your curb appeal for one thing, but your security for another. When we say that the door is the most visible thing, we’re not just thinking about what the neighbors think; we’re thinking about how tempting it could be to intruders as well. If your garage door looks a bit worse for wear or it’s just not as secure as it could be, it’s a good idea to find a garage door service company to help you either repair or entirely replace the door altogether. In that way, you’ll know your home looks good, but you’ll also have the added benefit of knowing it’s much more secure, and that’s priceless.

If you want some more security (and it’s often better to be safe than sorry) and to be as safe as possible, some other things you can do include installing smoke detectors (that’s non-negotiable if you’re using the garage as a workshop or if anyone is going to be sleeping out there, but it’s useful no matter what you want to use the garage for) and a fire extinguisher, just in case. And you could also have some security cameras or a security system that covers the garage, which is especially important if the garage leads directly to the house – burglars often try to get into homes through the garage as people don’t always secure them properly.

Upgrade The Flooring

Another good idea is to upgrade the flooring because it can make a huge difference in the overall look of the space and how practical it is. Epoxy flooring is a popular choice because it’s durable, easy to clean, and it’s stain-resistant, so no matter what you want to use your garage for, the floor can always stay looking good. On top of that, epoxy flooring comes in a range of colors and finishes, meaning you can personalize the space how you want and you won’t have to compromise.

Or how about interlocking floor tiles? They’re easy to install and they can add a fantastic pop of color to your garage, but as a bonus, they’re comfortable underfoot, so if you want to turn the garage into a playroom or gym, for example, these could be the best option when it comes to flooring.

Final Thoughts

A garage makeover could be exactly what your home needs and it can truly transform a cluttered and unloved space into something wonderful that you’ll be proud of for many years to come. The key is to plan everything out before you get started, and, if possible, to know what you want to use the garage for when you’re done, and once you’ve got that in mind, you can create the room of your dreams.
