Book Review: The Undermining of Twyla and Frank
Last fall I read and loved The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen. This fall I read the follow up novel, The Undermining of Twyla and Frank, and loved it too!

The novel follows Twyla Banneker and Frank Ellis, best friends and partners in the Tanrian Marshals. They made an appearance or were mentioned (I don’t remember exactly, but I remember the names) in the first book. Twyla and Frank are in their 50s, have been neighbors since their grown children were little, and grew closer/became best friends after Twyla’s husband passed away and Frank’s wife left him. Their close friendship eventually led Frank into encouraging Twyla to join the Tanrian Marshals and become his partner. Now they patrol the supernatural realm but after Hart defeated all the zombie/undead monsters in The Undermining of Hart and Mercy, work has been quiet, slow, and actually a bit boring. The quiet times end when Hart and Mercy happen upon the dead body of a colleague of theirs and dragons. This comes as a huge surprise because everyone thought dragons had been extinct for years. Not only are there dragons, but instead of breathing fire they breathe glitter! Now Twyla and Frank must figure out how their colleague died and where the dragons came from.
This was a really entertaining book and I couldn’t put it down. I loved Twyla, Frank, Duckers, and seeing Hart, Mercy, and others again. The book and world that the book takes place in is so fun and quirky. While this book didn’t have that hot, tense, relationship between Hart and Mercy, there was something beautiful in the slow build up of love between Twyla and Frank. They have been best friends for years and have been through a lot together and supported each other through tough and happy times. They’ve been with each other when injured working as Marshals, they’ve been there for one another through ups and downs with their kids, and more. Seeing them realize their feelings for each other was so heartwarming and beautiful.
I’m looking forward to the next book coming out next year! Where Frank and Twyla had this quiet love about them, I think Rosie’s book is going to be high energy and fun since she seems like such a firecracker!
Read this if you want a spicy paranormal romance with the friends to lovers trope.
