Book Review: Butterfly Games
I was sent an early copy of Butterfly Games by Kelly Scarborough and read it this past week. If you like historical fiction, royalty, and forbidden love then this upcoming novel might be for you!

The novel is based on real historical figures and takes place in 1800s Sweden. The story takes place over the course of a few years and focuses on Jacquette Gyldenstolpe, a young Swedish Countess. Her mother is a maid of honor with the Queen and her stepfather works closely with the Crown Prince so although she’s mostly neglected by her family, she’s always immersed in the royal life. Her mother, Aurora, is always trying to advance her husband and her daughter, but Jacquette is not that interested in court life and political intrigue, otherwise known in this world as “butterfly games”. What Jacquette is interested in though is Prince Oscar whom she meets in her early teens when he first becomes prince after the previous royal family was ousted. Over time the two become good friends and develop feelings for one another, but anything between the would be forbidden. Even though she’s a countess, Oscar needs to marry someone of royal blood to strengthen his family’s hold on the throne since they are not of royal blood. Can they stay in each other’s lives if they can’t really be together? Will their secret feelings cause a scandal?
I enjoyed this book. I was hooked on the storyline early on and I found the storyline interesting. Since I don’t really know anything about Swedish royalty, I found it especially interesting. The story captured by interest, but at times I felt like the story was dragging. The book isn’t even that long so I’m not sure why it felt like that at times. Maybe the story needed to be sped up or have more happen to make it go quicker? Anyway, Jacquette was likable for the most part, but sometimes her naivety was a little annoying. But, I think that made it realistic, because most teenage girls who think they’re in love would also be a little naive or blind to reality. Rose colored glasses and all.
Overall, I liked the book and if you’re interested in historical fiction – especially based on real people – then you should check this out. It comes out in January 20, 2026!
