Book Review: Accomplice to the Villain

The third installment in the Assistant to the Villain series by Hannah Nicole Maehrer came out this past summer, but I just got around to reading it this past week. Accomplice to the Villain picks up shortly after Apprentice to the Villain and we get some more POVs in this one.

In what is possibly the slowest of slow burns, Trystan aka “The Villain” and Evie have sort of acknowledged their feelings for one another – well as truthful as either of them are capable of being on the subject – but because of a prophecy they heard in the previous book that they’d be each other’s downfall, Trystan is really holding off on giving in on his feelings for her. King Benedict is still trying to bring down Trystan and fulfill the prophecy. And we finally learn more about Kingsley’s backstory – he’s actually Alexander Kingsley, a prince from another kingdom, who grew up being best friends with Trystan, Clare, Tatiana, and I assume Trystan’s brother Malcolm too. He was cursed accidentally by an enchantress and has been stuck as a frog for the past 10 years. A major storyline in this book, as they continue to battle Benedict, is to find a way to lift the curse from Kingsley because they believe freeing him is a key to saving them all and saving magic.

I really liked this book and was so happy that Evie and Trystan seemed to finally make some progress on their slow burn romance! I also liked reading some chapters from other characters like Clare, Becky, Gideon, and Kingsley! As much as I liked the story, I found it took me much longer to get through the book than I anticipated. It took me about a week, which to most people probably doesn’t seem long at all but for me personally I thought I’d be done a little quicker with it. Aside from that, I enjoyed the book and it’s signature humor.

The next book is supposed to be the last in the series so I’m looking forward to seeing how it will all wrap up.
