Book Review: The Bodyguard Affair

I’ve been a fan of Amy Lea’s books for a few years now, but I think her latest, The Bodyguard Affair, might be her best yet!

This romcom follows Andi Ziegler and Nolan Crosby. Andi is the personal assistant to the Canadian Prime Minister’s wife and Nolan is the Prime Minister’s new bodyguard or close protection officer. When the two first meet they realize they know each other. They met one night 3 years ago right before Nolan was stationed abroad in the military. Now they are working closely together and the attraction and chemistry is still there, but Nolan has no intentions of staying in Ottawa long term. He is planning to stay in town long enough to get his mom who is suffering from Alzheimers settled into a care facility and then hoping to get an assignment anywhere else. So it looks like they are destined to just be friends.

However, when paparazzi photos of Andi and the Prime Minister make it look like they are having an affair and sales of Andi’s romance novel (written with a pen name) about a Prime Minister having an affair with his assistant start to skyrocket, Andi lies and swears to Gretchen – the wife of the Prime Minister – that she is not the author of the book. In order to help put the rumors to rest, and because Gretchen thinks Andi and Nolan are secretly dating, Andi and Nolan decide to fake date. But can they keep things fake or will it become real? Will their fake dating help end rumors that Andi and the Prime Minister are having an affair? Will her secret side career as a romance writer be revealed?

I loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. I loved the storyline and really liked both Andi and Nolan. There was a more serious storyline about Nolan and his complicated relationship with his mom, which was really emotional and surprising for a romcom but I really liked it being in the book. I enjoyed reading about the development of Andi and Nolan’s relationship and also how they both evolve individually.

Read this if you want a spicy fake dating romcom.
