Book Review: Love Song

If Elle Kennedy writes it (especially if it’s in the Briar/Off Campus universe) I will read it. Love Song is her new interconnected standalone that follows Wyatt Graham and Blake Logan. Yes, that’s right – Garrett & Hannah’s son and Logan and Grace’s daughter!

I have been so excited to read this and it did not disappoint. The novel follows Blake and Wyatt during the summer at their families’ shared lake house in Lake Tahoe. Blake’s boyfriend of two years (Isaac whom we met in the Campus Diaries books) is about to start his career in the NFL and gets hit with a scandal – leaked sex tapes of him and a cheerleader. He’s been cheating on Blake for over a year! Needing some time to regroup and figure out what she wants to do post-graduation, she heads to her family’s house in Lake Tahoe as soon as the semester is over. The Logans and Grahams own a huge house there together and spend a month there every summer. All the other families that we love (Di Laurentis’, Tuckers, Davenports, Connellys, etc.) spend time there for part of the summers as well. So, Blake decides to go early and spend the entire summer there alone so she can figure things out. Little does she know Wyatt is also spending the whole summer there as he tries to work past his writers block. Wyatt has been living in Nashville for the past few years building his music career, determined not to get any special treatment due to his mom’s success.

Wyatt and Blake have known each other all their lives and Blake has had a crush on Wyatt, who is 4 years older than her, since she was a teenager. However, when she was 16, she told him and he just thought it was cute which was mortifying. Now they have to spend the summer together alone when they both had banked on having the whole place to themselves all summer. Will they get along or kill each other? Will Wyatt help Blake figure out what she wants to do with her life and will Blake help Wyatt find inspiration for his music?

I could not put this book down. I started it over the weekend and finished on Monday. I honestly could’ve finished earlier, but I had to stop myself! I was hooked from start to finish. I loved Wyatt and Blake – even Wyatt’s moodiness at times and Blake’s stubbornness later on in the novel. I really appreciate the way Elle Kennedy can make a book so funny and also incorporate really heavy themes and topics in pretty much all of her books. I loved the building tension between Blake and Wyatt and then the deep love that develops between them is so good.

I wasn’t a fan of the Beau storyline that occurs in the later part of the book, but I assume that’s to set up the next book and I hope the pay off for that is going to be worth it!

If you’re a fan of the Off Campus/Briar universe you definitely have to check this book out.

Side note: I cannot wait for the tv show for Off Campus to premiere in May!
