Protecting Your Home After A Flood

When it comes to extreme weather, Mother Nature knows how to do her bit. She sends the tornadoes, the fires, the blizzards – and then she sends the floods. If you live in an area that’s prone to flooding each year, then you have two options:

  • Move to an area without flooding – not always feasible
  • Learn to protect your home from flooding – feasible.

Your home should have proper ventilation in your home if you know there is a risk of flooding, but it’s not always possible to prepare for something that can happen – quite literally – overnight. It’s for this reason that you should always have emergency water damage restoration companies on speed dial. You don’t have to live in a wet climate to get flooded out, but you do need to know how to handle it. Let’s take a look at a few tips to ensure that you are going to be able to limit flood damage.

  • Sort The Gutters – Yearly

Every single year, your gutters need to be on your radar. You need to know that your gutters are able to cope with heavy rainfall, and this is a job for the professionals! Twice a year, you need them to come and clear out twigs and other debris that accumulates in the gutters, so that the water can continue to flow.

  • Doors & Window Sealant Checks

The windows and doors are made weather-proof by having the right amount of sealant around the outside of them. This stops the rain from pouring through when it does come down, and regular repairs and maintenance will ensure that this stays intact. Sealant erosion WILL let the water through.

  • Mind The Electrics

All of your appliances should be as high as possible if you know that the heavy rain is going to bring flooding. You also need to make sure that your fuse box is secure from water – just in case. Water and electricity do not mix, so when there is a risk of flooding, figure out the protocol with your electric company.

The clean up after a flood is always pretty heinous. No one wants to have to remove half of their things because the water damage is too much. Most emergency water damage restoration companies are able to come out and help at any time of night or day. They can tell you whether your furniture is salvageable or not. The wet walls may need to be removed and replaced, and anything fabric should be thrown away.

Moving back into your home after a flood has to happen after the water has been removed, cleaning has occurred and anything that could be dried has dried properly. You should still keep an eye on any of the family having any issues with allergies or infections, as this could mean that there is mould in the property.

Dealing with a flood is not always easy but it’s necessary when you live in places that are prone to flooding. Make sure that you know what comes next, and you won’t have a problem.
