Book Review: Fly, Butterfly

Summer time and the ongoing pandemic is the perfect time to read Annicken R. Day’s novel, Fly, Butterfly The novel doesn’t only take place in the summer, in face it takes places over the course of multiple years. It also doesn’t have anything to do with a pandemic, but we’ll get to why it’s a good read during all the craziness.

Fly Butterfly

Fly, Butterfly follows Maya, a VP of sales at a tech company in New York City. She is in her early 40s and has spent years building her career and trying to be taken seriously as a woman in the corporate world. But is a successful career enough for a happy life? Would a more relaxed life style where you only choose things that make you happy be enough? And do you have to pick one or the other or can you have both? After making a huge, life changing decision at work, Maya spends a few weeks in Kauai, Hawaii to figure out what’s next for her. She hasn’t lived a carefree life filled with whimsy and dreams since she was a child, however her time in Hawaii makes her realize what she has been missing in her life and sometimes we spend all of our energy working towards something that doesn’t ultimately mean that much to us. Maya spends the next few years figuring out her life and trying to mesh her two worlds together for a happier life. Will she be successful?

I say this book is perfect for summer, because the time she spends in Hawaii has me thinking of long, peaceful summer days. I also said this book is great to read during this weird time we find ourselves in, because I feel like all of this time we’ve all had at home has made a lot of us rethink our lives. What’s really important in life? Are you doing what truly makes you happy? And if not, what can you do to change things?

I loved the story, the friendships Maya makes and the love she finds. For a novel that is so rooted in real life situations, there is a real beauty to the story and even aspects of the other worldly.

I really enjoyed this story and recommend it!
