Book Review: The Claimant
Months ago I was sent The Claimant, a memoir by Rachel Weinhaus. She tells the story of receiving an envelope informing her that she was part of a two-hundred-fifteen-million-dollar settlement from her graduate school alma mater, USC, because she was seen by a doctor, George Tyndall, at the Student Health Center who had been accused by thousands of sexual assault.

Rachel writes about her coming to terms with what happened to her and details how for a long time she had blocked it out or didn’t think what she experienced was worth telling or that she was a “victim”. Her coming to terms with what happened in her mid-twenties opens up other memories and experiences to her about an assault she experienced as a child at the hands of a teenage neighbor.
Rachel’s story was really interesting and I was engaged the entire time reading about her experiences and working through what happened to her and how these things effected other parts of her life without her even being fully aware at times.
The Claimant is a short memoir and I was fully invested in her story the entire time.
