Book Review: Blood & Honey

Last week I read the second book in the Serpent & Dove trilogy by Shelby Mahurin, Blood & Honey, and was reunited with Lou and Reid whom I love so much.

The novel picks up where Serpent & Dove left off and Lou, Reid, Coco, Ansel, Beau, and Madame Labelle are on their way to the Dame Rouge camp led by Coco’s aunt and hope she will give them protection and offer shelter. It is tricky though since Lou is a Dame Blanche – the enemy of the Dame Rouges – and Reid is a chasseur ( a witch hunter trained by the church).

The novel follows as Lou, Reid, their friends, and some new friends try to secure allies to fight against Lou’s mother, Morgane. Lou’s mother is very powerful and her goal is to capture Lou and sacrifice/kill her. Lou struggles with trying to keep everyone safe from her mother while also trying to get a handle on her magic so she doesn’t let it consume her like her mother. Reid also struggles with his new circumstances – being on the run, being married to a witch when he’s been taught all his life that magic is evil, and coming to terms with his identity.

I really liked this book, but not as much as the first book. I loved how sassy, funny, and charming Lou was in book 1 and she and her decisions annoyed me a bit in this book. The tension between Lou and Reid in book 1 was so good and in this one they were struggling as a couple which makes sense with what is going on in the book, but obviously then it makes it not as fun of a romance when there’s issues. Overall, I still did really like this book and being reunited with all the characters!
