Book Review: Gods & Monsters

I finished the Serpent & Dove trilogy by Shelby Mahurin this week with the last book, Gods & Monsters. I already miss the characters! This post will contain some minor spoilers for the previous books.

Gods & Monsters picks up where Blood & Honey left off. Lou, Reid, Coco, and Beau are trying to continue with their plan to work with their allies, go to Chateau le Blanc, and kill Morgane, Lou’s mother, despite the setback at the end of book 2 and tragic loss of Ansel and possible loss of more of their friends. No one knows that the Blood Witches who they thought had allied with them have betrayed them and Lou is now possessed.

We follow the group as they try to save Lou, then Reid erasing his memory to protect his wife (the timing here, seriously!), and try to save the world basically from the war that Morgane wages.

I loved this book and definitely loved it more than Blood & Honey, which saw me getting a bit frustrated with Lou. I loved them working together to try to defeat Morgane and win. It was emotional and full of love and determination. I do wish that there was more of Lou and Reid getting to be together. While they were together in the physical sense for almost all of the book, they weren’t really as Lou was possessed for probably 1/3 of the book and then Reid not remembering Lou for another 1/3 or so of the book. I just wish we got more of them being together, in love, and fighting together as their true selves.

I already miss these characters! I plan to read the spinoff series and already have The Scarlet Veil. The main character in that is Celie! I believe the Serpent & Dove characters are in The Scarlet Veil or at least make appearances so I’m excited for that when I eventually read it!
