Book Review: Raiders of the Lost Heart

If you combine Indiana Jones, The Mummy, Lara Croft, and add in a bunch of spice you get Raiders of the Lost Heart by Jo Segura and it is amazing!

I had such a fun time reading this book. The vibes were an A+ for me. The novel follows Socorro “Corrie” Mejia and Ford Matthews. They’re both archaeologists and have known each other since they were in grad school 12 years ago. But 8 years ago when they were both about to act on the crush they had on each other, things didn’t go as planned and they’ve avoided each other since and even become rivals. Now Ford is leading a dig in the Mexican jungle searching for Chimalli, an ancient Aztec warrior but he and his team haven’t made much progress. He’s going to need some help and Corrie just so happens to be an expert on Chimalli.

The two work together along with their mutual friend, Ethan, and their interns to try to find Chimalli. I loved both Corrie and Ford. Corrie’s struggles with being taken seriously as a woman archaeologist were so realistic and relatable and Ford’s personal struggles caring for a sick parent was realistic as well. The tension between the two of them was so fun and delicious. They both like each other, but hate that they like each other still after all these years. I really appreciated the fact that as much as they got on each other’s nerves, they still really respected each other and knew how brilliant the other was.

The book was fun and full of adventure. I already miss the characters! I’m looking forward to the next book in the series, Temple of Swoon, coming out this winter which follows Corrie’s younger colleague, Miri. I hope Corrie and Ford make an appearance!

Read this if you want a spicy romcom with the friends to rivals to lovers trope.
