Book Review: Heart of the Sun Warrior

Earlier this week I finished the second book in the Celestial Kingdom duology – Heart of the Sun Warrior by Sue Lynn Tan.

The novel picks up shortly after the ending of Daughter of the Moon Goddess. Xingyin is back with her mother on the moon, but when a mysterious guest arrives and threatens their lives and the lives of all the people in the Immortal Realm, she must work with her friends to find a way to defeat the enemy.

This book, like Daughter of the Moon Goddess, had such beautiful imagery that I could imagine everything. I continued to love Xingyin and all the characters. The storyline was so good and I was hooked from start to finish which doesn’t always happen with the second book in series. I can’t say too much about what happens without spoiling the story, but it is full of action, planning with allies, love (in all forms – family, friendship, romantic) and Xingyin continues to learn more about herself and what she wants in life. The book did make me cry a couple of times too.

I’m still not a fan of love triangles and it continued on in this book. And the thing is I like both Wenzhi and Liwei! I think this is the only time I’ve ever wished a book was actually a why choose instead haha. The ending is full of hope and I know the epilogue is in Tales of the Celestial Kingdom which is a book of short stories. I do have the book, but don’t have plans to read it in the just yet as I’m gearing up to read Halloween and other fall reads soon. But, I might just read the epilogue first and save the other short stories for later!

I highly recommend this duology if you are looking for a fantasy romance based on Chinese mythology.
