Book Review: Feral is the Beast

I first heard of Feral is the Beast by Nisha J. Tuli earlier this year and knew I wanted to read it. I figured it was the perfect read for this time of year with it’s main character being a witch and the synopsis sounded like a spicy, fun, dark romance.

The novel follows Vespera, a healer, and secretly a 400 year old witch. After bad experiences in the past, Vespera likes her quiet life. Then, one day she is abducted from her apothecary shop and brought to the castle of the Feral King. Stories swirl have swirled around the village about the Feral King being a monster and evil. He supposedly attacked and ate some of the villagers recently. Vespera is taken by the king, Ferran, in hopes that she can find a way using her abilities/powers as a witch to help him manage the curse put upon him. Vespera helps Ferran with her magic knowledge and all different herbs and potions to help him manage the monster inside him and as they work together, feelings develop and their attract to one another only grows.

I really enjoyed this book. It was more lighthearted than I was expecting since the synopsis sounds like dark romance, but it ended up being a pleasant surprise. I really liked Ferran and Vespera and their attraction to one another that they try to fight is so good. Like I said, it ended up not being very dark at all. Ferran is not the evil king who kidnaps someone to force them to help him and he’s mean and demanding of them. Instead, he is basically the nicest character ever in these types of books. Yes, he did abduct her, but then he basically says his fearsome persona was an act to get her to help him and then proceeds to treat her like a queen.

Overall, I really liked the book and the characters and plan to eventually read the other book in the Cursed Captors series.
