Book Review: Powerless
I’m more than halfway through the Chestnut Springs series by Elsie Silver now that I’ve finished Powerless!

Powerless follows Jasper Gervais and Sloane Winthrop. Jasper is best friends with the Eaton brothers and a sort of adopted brother. He’s also a professional hockey player. Sloane is cousins with the Eatons through their late mother and a professional ballerina. Jasper and Sloane have been good friends since they were kids. After a tragic accident when Jasper was a teenager, he was left behind by his parents. He became good friends with Beau Eaton and the Eatons took him in. It was at Wishing Well Ranch as a teenager that he first met Sloane, his friends’ little cousin who would spend summers at the ranch, away from her wealthy lifestyle in the city.
Sloane had a crush on Jasper from the moment she first saw him as a kid, but he was a few years older than her, best friends with her cousins, and saw her as a little sister. Over the years, they remained close friends and while Sloane’s interest in Jasper never faded she believed it to still be unrequited. Until she became engaged to the son of a business associate of her father’s and Jasper admits to himself that he has feelings for her and he would be a hundred times better for her than her jerk of a fiancé. So what happens when Sloane calls off the wedding just minutes before walking down the aisle and she asks Jasper to take her away?
I loved this book and Jasper and Sloane were so good togehter. Jasper’s tragic past broke my heart, but I was so happy that he had the Eatons. Jasper is a pretty private and quiet person so it was really heartwarming to see that he and Sloane have been friends for decades and that she actually knows some things about him that his best friends don’t even know. It shows how much trust they have in each other.
While I loved reading Jasper and Sloane’s love story, I think it’s my least favorite of the 3 Chestnut Springs books I’ve read so far just because I didn’t connect with them as much as I did with Rhett & Summer and Cade & Willa. Nonetheless, I still loved the book!
Read this if you want a spicy friends to lovers romance.
