Book Review: The Maid

I’d heard about The Maid series by Nita Prose for over a year now and I thought I would finally start the series this fall since it’s as good a time as any to start a mystery. I knew a little bit about the premise before I began such as that the main character, Molly, is a maid at a hotel and is neurodivergent so I’ve been really interested in reading the books.

The Maid follows Molly, a maid at the Regency Grand Hotel. Molly is in her mid 20s and was raised by her gran, who was also a maid but for a wealthy family. It’s never specified if Molly is on the autism spectrum or what she may be diagnosed with, but she does talk about how her gran used to help her out a lot to understand what people meant or to read people’s body language/expressions as it can be difficult for her to read people. She likes things clean, orderly, and often takes things literally. But, most importantly, Molly is a really good person, which makes her so lovable and it made me really feel for her when she didn’t see how people were taking advantage of her or not being kind.

The Regency Grand Hotel has some guests who are frequent guests such as Mr. & Mrs. Black, a wealthy couple with an age gap as Mrs. Giselle Black is the 2nd Mrs. Black. She has always been friendly with Molly and would even give her some pointers like how far away to stand from strangers and other social tips. Then one day Molly goes to clean the Black’s suite and finds Mr. Black dead.

Molly ends up getting caught up in the whole case because of helping out people she thinks are her friends. We follow along as Molly navigates friendships and who are and aren’t truly her friends and tries to prove her innocence.

I really enjoyed this book and loved Molly a lot. Although I did get frustrated with her at times for not seeing how she was being used at times, but I guess that can be realistic for any of us. The end had a bit of a twist that I did not see coming and I’m not sure how I feel about it. But, overall, I did really like the book. I also love the people that ended up being people Molly could trust (no spoilers on who!) and can’t wait to see those friendships and relationships develop more in the next book!

Read this if you want a lighthearted, quirky mystery novel with a neurodivergent fmc.
