Book Review: The Mystery Guest

I revisited Molly the Maid by reading The Mystery Guest, the second book in The Maid series by Nita Prose. And I, of course, brought my book along with me during my girls weekend in New York City this past weekend so I could take photos/video of it in the lobby of my hotel!

The Mystery Guest picks up four years after The Maid. Molly is still working at The Regency Grand Hotel and is now the Head Maid. Everything is going great for her. She loves her job, she’s training a new maid, Lily, she still has Sunday dinners with Mr. Preston, the hotel’s doorman and an old friend of her gran’s, and she is in love with her long time boyfriend and co-worker, Juan Manuel. When famous mystery writer, J.D. Grimthorpe, decides to hold a event in the tea room of The Regency Grand, Molly is selected to help set up and run the event. Everything is going smoothly until Grimthorpe has a sip of his tea and then collapses and dies. Detective Stark returns and is still as exasperated with Molly as she was a few years ago. And of course she suspects Molly has something to do with the death.

We follow along as Molly tries to figure out what happened to Grimthorpe. The novel alternates between present day and when Molly was a little girl, because early on in the book we learn Molly has a history with Grimthorpe dating back to her childhood.

I really enjoyed this novel and loved Molly even more in this book. She was still her lovable self that doesn’t always understand all social cues and takes things a little too literal at times due to her being on the spectrum. But, I found her to be less naive in this one compared to the first book, which really showed a lot of growth in her character. The scenes from her childhood between her and her gran were so touching and really made me emotional.

I can’t wait to continue on with the series!
