Book Review: A Promise of Lies

A few days ago I finished reading the third and final book in the Shadows of Tenebris Court seres by Clare Sager, A Promise of Lies. It was a nonstop novel full of twists, turns, and reveals.

The novel picks up where A Touch of Poison ended. Kat and Bastian have been separated because she had to leave Dusk and go to Dawn with the new king, Cyrus, as part of a bargain. Bastian and their friends will go to any lengths to get Kat back. He is distraught without Kat, but the Night Queen also demands his attention as her shadow and wants him to focus on finding the the Crown of Ash for her. The Crown would allow the two courts to be ruled by one person instead of being forced to sleep. Meanwhile Kat is using her time there to try to spy and find out the truth behind the former king, Cyrus’ father’s, death. The more they all dig, the more secrets come out that threaten the alliance between the two courts and their lives.

I loved this book and all the tension and longing between the separated lovers. I really enjoyed all of the twists and reveals. I did, however, get annoyed with Bastian at times with how blinded he was by the queen. At one point I wanted to yell at Kat that she deserved better, because at moments I started to question whether Bastian would choose her over the queen.

Overall, I loved the book and am sad the series is over. But I’m hopeful we’ll see the characters again if (hopefully) the author writes more books set in the same universe.

Read this series if you want a spicy fantasy romance with the enemies to lovers trope.
