Book Review: Onyx Storm

I’m sure you’ve all heard that Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros it out. I finished the 3rd book in the Empyrean series over the weekend and loved it, but have so many questions! I’m going to try to keep this spoiler free for Onyx Storm, but will contain spoilers for Fourth Wing and Iron Flame.

The novel picks up shortly after the end of Iron Flame. Xaden has turned venin, but hasn’t fully turned yet so he’s doing everything he can to keep it from progressing and find a cure in the meantime. Only Violet and few other of their close friends know about this and are helping to keep the secret and find a cure. While all this is happening, Navarre is still in the middle of a war against the venin. The riders at Basgiath have to learn to work with the fliers who are on their side now.

Violet, Xaden, and some of their friends – Ridoc, Imogen, Garrick, Aaric, Dain, Mira, Cat (and I can’t really remember if anyone else was with them ha) travel through a bunch of the islands trying to find the 7th breed of dragons (irids), Andarna’s family, because they think they could be a key to winning the war and defeating/curing venin. On their journey they learn more information, more questions are raised, and bonds are strengthened. But can they find what they need to win the war and stop not just the venin, but the silver haired venin who seems to always be one step ahead of Violet and is targeting her?

I loved the book, but was anxious pretty much the entire time because I was so worried something horrible was going to happen. I hate that Xaden is venin, but I loved that he and Violet are on the same page again and united and working together against their obstacles after the miscommunication and how much they had to be separated in the previous book. I love all the side characters and want them all to survive. Over the course of the 3 books there have been really sad losses (I still get sad when I think about Liam – I sobbed reading Fourth Wing!) and I’m hoping no one else in their group of friends dies!

The ending left us with so many questions and theories. I have debated with a few friends already about so many things. I can’t wait to see if any of these theories are correct or if we’re all wrong and Rebecca Yarros has other things up her sleeve. I know she hasn’t started writing the 4th book yet, but she said it’s plotted. I hope we hear some sort of announcement later this year so we know how long of a wait we’re in for!
