Book Review: Immortal

I am a fan of Sue Lynn Tan’s Daughter of the Moon Goddess duology, so I was looking forward to her latest novel, Immortal. Overall, I loved the two main characters but didn’t love the book as much as Daughter of the Moon Goddess. Read on for more of my thoughts!

The novel follows Liyen, the heiress to the crown in her mortal kingdom. After being sickly for a long time and then being poisoned in a river, her grandfather gives her the coveted Divine Pearl Lotus to save her life. But the Divine Pearl Lotus was meant to be given to the immortal queen they serve. When the queen and the God of War come to collect, the stress of it all ends up leading to her grandfather’s death leaving Liyen to vow to end their kingdom’s obligation to the queen. She wants to fight against the immortals, but at the same time they have a common enemy that she needs to work with them against. She will have to work especially close with the God of War. But what happens when she has to not only work with her enemy, but starts to fall for him?

I loved Liyen and Zhanwei. I think they’re great characters and I really enjoyed learning more about them, following them, and watching their relationship develop. However, I wasn’t as interested in the actual storyline of the book. It was fine and I didn’t dislike the story, but compared to the rich characters, the storyline just wasn’t all that interesting to me. I did like the twist in the book though.

So overall, I loved the characters of the book, but the story was just okay for me.
