Book Review: Harvest Season

I’m a fan of Brynne Weaver’s dark romcoms and just read her latest, Harvest Season – the 2nd book in the Seasons of Carnage trilogy.

This post contains spoilers for Tourist Season!

The novel picks up where Tourist Season left off. Nolan and Harper are together now and no longer trying to kill each other especially since Nolan knows Harper is not the person he was looking for who was responsible for his brother’s death. But of course things can’t be easy for them. They don’t know that Sheriff Yates in their small town of Cape Carnage is actually serial killer, La Plume, who has evaded capture for decades. Readers learned at the end of the previous novel. He knows the truth about Nolan and Harper and works in the background without their knowledge on his own schemes involving them. On top of that, a group of amateur investigators called the “Sleuthseekers” are in town looking for their members who came to investigate clues on La Plume and film some footage. Little do they know the guys they’re looking for were killed by Arthur (Harper’s friend who is an elderly gentlemen who also used to be a serial killer but now has alzheimers!) and (unbeknownst to Harper and Nolan) the Yates! Can the two keep the Sleuthseekers off their track? Will they figure out the true identity of Sheriff Yates?

I liked this book, but not as much as Tourist Season. It frustrated me a little how Nolan and Harper had no clue about Yates. For two people who are supposed to be so smart and observant the two not knowing a thing about Yates or how he was surveilling their every move and plotting against them and how easily they were manipulated. That annoyed me a little because I just found it unbelievable (I know, the novel is fiction so this serial killer romcom is not necessarily believable) that they could be so easily fooled.

Despite being a little frustrated with the characters in this novel, I think I’m going to really like the next book which is the last book in the series. Because they’re going to have to learn the truth about Yates in this one and then find a way to take him down. It comes out in the spring so we’ll see how it all plays out!
