Book Review: Tourist Season

I have had Brynne Weaver’s Tourist Season, the first book in her new The Seasons of Carnage series, on my bookshelf for a few months now and I finally read it last week!

This dark romcom is so funny, unhinged, and sexy and just what I expect from a Brynne Weaver novel in all the best ways. It follows Harper Starling and Nolan Rhodes. Harper has been living in Cape Carnage for a couple of years now and is a gardener to a wealthy old man, Arthur, who has been a mentor to her since they met. She lives in the cottage on his property and has been enjoying her life in Cape Carnage. She is the sweet gardener by day and protector of the town by night. After surviving a serial killer and being saved by Sloane and Rowan in Butcher & Blackbird, she started anew in Cape Carnage and will not let anyone try to cause trouble in her town and sanctuary. Any tourists who are causing trouble in her Carnage will not be tolerated and Harper will dispose of. Literally. With her wood chipper!

Nolan Rhodes lost his brother in a tragic hit & run accident a few years ago. In accident in which he almost died as well. Since his recovery he has devoted his time to finding those responsible for his brother’s death and punishing them. He’s already found and killed all the passengers in the car, but the last one is the driver – Harper Starling. Nolan heads to Cape Carnage to find Harper and get his revenge, but the person he finds is not who he was expecting. Was this Harper the one responsible for his brother’s death and his injuries?

He vows to get revenge and Harper knows he wants to kill her and not matter what she says he won’t believe her. But first, she needs his help. Some people have been snooping around town that could put her mentor, Arthur, in danger since he has Alzheimers. She needs Nolan’s help to move years worth of buried evidence (aka digging up and moving bodies) to protect Arthur. Nolan agrees to help her first and then he can go back to getting his revenge on her. But will they fall for each other before he can get revenge? Is Harper even the one he’s really looking for?

I loved this book. It was so fun and such a quick read. Both Harper and Nolan were very likable and I loved seeing their feelings for one another grow and develop despite how much they said they hated each other. I was definitely not expecting the twist at the end and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book. I just got the second book but I might wait until later in the summer or early fall to read it for the vibes.

Read this if you want a spicy, dark romcom with the enemies to lovers trope.
