Book Review: Grim Tidings
B.K. Borison’s latest book in her Ghosted series, Grim Tidings, came out recently and I had heard nothing but great things about it. I really liked Good Spirits so I had high hopes for Grim Tidings and I loved this one as well!

The novel follows Darcy Moore, a reaper, and Gabriel Aetos, a guardian angel. When Darcy gets new assignments she’s given a vision with little clues for the next soul she has to reap. She’s been doing this for over a century now and getting tired of death and being at the end of people’s lives. When Darcy gets a new assignment and is sent to a small coastal town, she decides she’s going to try to save this person instead of taking their soul. On her first night in town, she goes to a bar and is instantly attracted to the bartender, Gabriel. Normally, Darcy keeps to herself, but Gabriel is friendly and gets her out of her comfort zone. One thing leads to another, but before things go all the way they realize each other’s identities. Reapers and guardian angels are rivals/enemies even though they work in the same department. Reapers essentially take souls and guardian angels are tasked with guarding, protecting, and keeping people safe. Gabriel, the guy who was so kind and warm to Darcy, now wants her to get out of his town. But, Darcy can’t leave town because of her assignment even though taking another soul is the last thing she wants to do.
As a guardian angel, Gabriel wants Darcy gone. However, as a person, there’s something about Darcy that he’s drawn to and he can’t stop thinking about her. Can they put aside their differences and figure out how to be together? Can they be together when their jobs are opposite of each other? What will Gabriel think when he learns Darcy’s assignment is his friend? And will Darcy be successful in saving a soul rather than reaping one?
I loved this book and the more distance I put between myself and the book since finishing it, the deeper my love for it goes. Darcy is tired, weighed down by her responsibilities. Gabriel has been around a very long time and while he doesn’t have the weight of knowing he’s taking someone’s soul (even if it is their time), he has been protecting people for centuries. The burden of having to protect everyone and knowing it’s impossible to keep an eye on everyone and try to keep reapers and other bad things from happening to the humans around him is tough and tiring as well. The two end up really helping each other and lifting some of the weight of their responsibilities and their guilt off each other. Darcy, especially, has a lot of self-loathing going on because she hates having to take people from their loved ones.
The ending was good and emotional. I definitely cried reading this book! I loved Darcy and Gabriel together and hope we see more of them in the next book in the series! We did get mentions of Harriet and on the page presence of Nolan for a few pages. I hope we see more of all of these characters in the next book!
Read this if you want a paranormal romance set around Halloween with the enemies to lovers trope.
