They can be terribly inconvenient, but sometimes there is just no way of knowing when a leak in the home might occur. Not only are they a big nuisance, though, but they can be quite difficult for homeowners to fix themselves. Unless you have a bit of plumbing experience, there’s a good chance that you won’t know where to even begin with fixing a leak, let alone know the kind of tools and materials that you may need to fix it. When it comes to issues with a property’s plumbing, it is almost always best to call out the professionals to fix things for you.

It’s always good to know why a leak happened in the first place, though, and then you can try and prevent the same one from occurring in the future. Here are some of the most common causes of household leaks.

Blocked Drains
If your drains are blocked then it figures that there will be nowhere for all the water from your house to drain away to. If this situation gets quite bad, then there’s a chance that the drains will overflow and cause a leak. Simply cleaning out drains in your bathroom and kitchen sink should be enough to keep them clear. Putting bleach down your toilet should similarly keep it free from blockages as well. However, if the drain is badly blocked, it might be time to call a plumber for assistance.

Slab Leaks
Sometimes, the slabs on which your property is built could be at risk of cracking and breaking because of ground movement underneath them. As a result, this could let moisture and water from the ground seep into your home. Slab leak locating can be very difficult to do for the ordinary homeowner, but there are some signs that this is occurring. For instance, your water bills might be slowly increasing or you might notice a lot more mold and mildew in your home. If you think that you have a slab leak on your hands, it’s important that you get a plumber who can find the source and fix things as soon as possible.

Old Pipes
Over time, pipes will start to become weaker and more prone to cracks and wear. This is going to increase the risk of leaks in your home, so it’s always important to keep your whole plumbing system up to date. If the pipes have been in place for a couple of decades, then it could be time to consider replacing them.

Burst Pipes
One fear that all homeowners have in the winter is burst water pipes. When the temperature dips by quite a bit, water left in pipes will freeze and expand. This could cause the pipes to burst and leak all over. The best thing you can do to prevent this is to insulate all of the pipes in your home that are exposed. You can buy proper insulation materials for pipes in most hardware stores.

Hopefully, you never have to deal with any of these leaks!
