3 Top Habits That Increase Your Risk Of Disease

Unfortunately, statistics indicate that 95% of people worldwide are unwell, with just about 5% who are conscious about their wellbeing. According to several medical surveys, many avoidable diseases could have been halted if people had taken precautionary measures. It also helps to bear in mind that being young is not clearance for a clean bill of health. Here are some examples you may want to be mindful of going forward.

  1. Living a sedentary lifestyle

The world’s population is believed to be moving more towards a sedentary lifestyle. This is largely due to the growing interest in white-collar jobs in the 21st century. As more people prefer to work in office spaces, exercise seems to have taken the backburner. In other words, unless you are deliberate about working out, you might slip into the routine of home and office without exercising your body. A continuous lack of exercise weakens the muscles and could increase your risk of lifestyle health conditions like obesity, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, etc. 

If the idea of working out is what turns you off, you may want to try low-impact exercises. These activities do not feel like working out but actually help tone your muscles and body in general. For example, yoga, swimming, and Pilates are excellent ways to keep your muscles and bones healthy without the need to lift weight or perform other strenuous exercises at the local gym.

  1. Failing to undergo age-specific health screenings

Male adults from the age of forty-five are expected to undergo crucial medical screening for prostate cancer, coronary heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, hypertension, etc. Indeed, it is quite a long list your physician may require you to test for. Among women, the list includes breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, cervical cancer, dental checks, etc. Speaking of the latter, you might need urgent root canal treatment to save your dentition. 

Admittedly, your current or past lifestyle choices could prompt the family physician to recommend specific screenings. The danger here is failing to undergo these age-specific medical tests because you feel fine. Unfortunately, your inability to undergo early screening may provide time for a health condition to fester until it is too late to treat. If you have cancer, early detection may increase your survival rate.

  1. Chronic stress

Did you know that chronic stress can reduce your immune system’s function? Uncontrolled stress causes a slowdown of your body’s natural defence system. It also impacts its inherent ability to ward off toxins that elicit an immune response. This is when the body becomes susceptible to recurrent infections.

In no time, you will begin to experience constant fatigue, insomnia, weakness, and a reduction in your cognitive processes. Chronic stress can last for several weeks or months, while its counterpart, acute stress, may occur for a few days. If you find yourself in this situation, you can seek ways and means to deal with the pressure. Coping mechanisms can be one way to alleviate stress and constant anxiety.

To conclude, the increasingly high cost of chronic disease treatment can be a reminder to live a healthier life.
