We all have days (or maybe even weeks) where we don’t feel our best. When we’re feeling down, it can be tough to see the positive things about ourselves. Our self-esteem can take a real hit. But it’s important to remember that our self-esteem is just like our physical health: it’s something we have to work on maintaining. Just like we exercise and eat right to stay physically healthy, we have to put effort into keeping our self-esteem healthy, too. Here are five simple things you can do to give your self-esteem a boost.

1. Get Rid of Negative Self-Talk

The first step is to get rid of any negative thoughts you have about yourself. We all have an inner critic, but if you find that your inner monologue is particularly harsh, it might be time to talk to a therapist. They can help you learn how to silence that critical voice and start thinking more positively about yourself. In the meantime, try reframing your negative thoughts into something more positive. For example, instead of thinking “I’m such a screw up,” try telling yourself “Everyone makes mistakes sometimes.”

2. Give Yourself Credit Where Credit is Due

We often dwell on our failures and dwell on the things we didn’t do well, while forgetting to give ourselves credit for our successes. Make a point of celebrating your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Whether it’s getting a promotion at work, completing a project you’ve been procrastinating on, or simply making it through a tough week, acknowledge your successes and give yourself a pat on the back. You deserve it!

3. Do Something Nice For Yourself

Treating yourself doesn’t have to mean buying yourself expensive things. But at the same time, if you want to do cosmetic dentistry or go on a holiday to treat yourself, you should. At the very least, do something every day that makes you happy and brings you joy. Maybe it’s taking a relaxing bath at the end of the day or reading your favorite book before bed. Whatever it is, make sure you’re taking time out for activities that make YOU happy.

4. Spend Time With People Who Make You Feel Good About Yourself

This one is important! Surrounding yourself with people who bring you down will only make you feel worse about yourself. If there are people in your life who are constantly putting you down or making you feel bad about yourself, try distancing yourself from them (or even cutting them out completely). Spend more time with people who make you feel good about who you are and make you laugh until your stomach hurts—those are the people who are worth your time and energy!

5. Learn to Accept Compliments Gracefully

How many times have you been complimented only to immediately brush it off or say something like “Oh, this old thing?” We’ve all been there! The next time someone pays you a compliment, instead of immediately rejecting it or downplaying it, try saying “Thank you” and accepting it graciously. It might not seem like a big deal, but learning to accept compliments gracefully is an important part of having healthy self-esteem—and it’ll make the person giving the compliment feel good too!
