Book Review: The Algorithm Will See You Now

The Algorithm Will See You Now by JL Lycette is a really interesting sci fi book that just released last month. I don’t often read sci fi, but this one really captured my attention!

The book takes place in the not so distant future in Seattle. Hope is a doctor for PRIMA, which is a growing healthcare system and technology that uses AI to use a person’s DNA to determine whether a patient would be responsive to treatment such as chemotherapy. Theoretically, it seems like a brilliant idea. If you have cancer and the algorithm tells you that genetically you won’t be responsive to treatment, then you wouldn’t put yourself through torturous treatments only to die anyway. But what happens when things go too far? AI is starting to take over and not only is it determining whether people would be responsive or not, but soon the option for treatment is taken out of people’s hands. If you are a non-respondent then why would insurance companies or hospitals spend money on you? Would they even admit you as a patient?

Hope was once a huge supporter or PRIMA and even did research that contributed to its conception, but after having a patient that was labeled as being responsive, then stop responding to treatment makes her question this program that is supposed to be 100% accurate. Hope and a few allies begin digging into PRIMA, its director, Hope’s boss, Marah Maddox and the truth about the technology and the ethics of how it is being used.

The book was really good and I found it so interesting. Funnily enough my friends and I were just talking about AI last week and chatgpt etc. The book is fiction, but it’s scary how realistic it is!

I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for an engaging and quick sci fi book, especially if the topic of AI is of interest to you.
