4 Eco-Friendly Cleaning Tips Everyone Needs To Read

We all want a clean home, but are you using the right cleaning methods and techniques? More specifically, are you cleaning with the environment in mind? Loads of cleaning techniques can be bad for the environment based on the equipment you use or the solutions you’re trying. We want to help you get the best of both worlds and enjoy a clean home without the environmental impact.

Your instinct tells you that eco-friendly cleaning is expensive and challenging. On the contrary, it could help you save money – and it’s very easy to implement all of the tips shown in this guide.

Avoid chemical cleaning products

Did you know that chemical cleaning products have a negative effect on the environment? According to sources, most cleaning chemicals include volatile organic compounds that can end up in the ozone layer. As a consequence, they damage the ozone layer, which is one of the main reasons we’re experiencing such drastic climate change.

If people cut down on their chemical usage and opt for natural cleaning solutions, we may give the ozone a break, allowing it to repair itself. You can clean most things using simple ingredients like vinegar, salt, baking soda, etc. Instead of using a chemical-based carpet cleaner, you could purchase a vacuum cleaner that uses water to steam clean the carpet. Ideas like this reduce your carbon footprint while ensuring you keep your house as clean as can be.

Ditch plastic as much as you can

Sometimes, you find great cleaning products without chemicals, but there’s one issue. They’re packed in plastic bottles or containers, which are then hard to recycle. If you do choose plastic bottles, ensure they are 100% recyclable.

Ideally, you want to ditch plastic as much as you can. Look for products with glass bottles or make your own cleaning solutions and put them in jars. The same goes for different cleaning equipment too. Why use a duster with a plastic handle when you can find one made from wood? The same goes for brushes and many other things; if there’s a non-plastic version, use it instead.

Leave single-use things in the past

It’s okay to admit that you use surface wipes to clean. They’re highly convenient and let you wipe down any surface in your home. In fact, they’d be perfect – if it wasn’t for the fact they’re single-use.

Once you’ve used a wipe, you throw it in the bin. When the whole packet is out, you buy more. It’s an endless cycle that creates a lot of waste, and it is completely avoidable. Swap your single-use cleaning wipes for reusable ones. You can find a microfiber cloth online that can be soaked in water or used alongside eco-friendly cleaning sprays. After using this, you simply rinse it out and hang it to dry. Then, it can be used again and again. Get a few of these cloths so you can clean one and still have another handy. It’s far more earth-friendly and you’ll begin to question why you ever used single-use cleaning wipes.

Reduce your water usage

We just mentioned dipping your cleaning cloths in water, but you should be cautious when using water to clean things. A slight dip or rinse is fine, but avoid using too much. For example, there’s no need to fill a bucket full of water to clean the floor. Just wet your mop and use it until it dries out; then wet it again. You avoid throwing away a huge bucket of water, which is such a waste.

The same goes for cleaning the dishes or your clothes; be smart to conserve water whenever possible. If you have a dishwasher, don’t clean the dishes by hand. It genuinely saves water if you use a dishwasher, as long as it’s full. Fill your washing machine as much as possible (without making it too full) so you can save water when cleaning your clothes. The more you think about it, the more you realize how easy it is to avoid wasting water while you clean.

Think of these four tips as a springboard to help you jump into more eco-friendly cleaning habits. It often feels like we’re fighting an unwinnable battle against climate change and carbon emissions, but if every person reading this adopts these habits, then we’re making a difference.

Share this with your friends and family so they can also clean without hurting the environment. The more people you encourage to follow these tips, the better it will be in the future.
