Book Review: Ruthless Vows

The Letters of Enchantment duology by Rebecca Ross is one of the most beautifully written books I’ve read in a long time. I loved Divine Rivals and just finished Ruthless Vows yesterday. This post contains some spoilers for book 1!

Ruthless Vows picks up shortly after the end of Divine Rivals. Iris is back in Oath with Attie working at the Inkridden Tribune and she has been reunited with her brother, Forest. Roman was mostly healed of his life threatening injuries by the Undelring God, Dacre, and is now at his mercy with most of his memory wiped. Iris and Roman’s typewriters that were magically linked were both left behind at Marisol’s house when they came under attack, but early on in the book they are both reunited with two of the three Alouette typewriters and are able to communicate. The problem is Roman doesn’t remember Iris and Iris has to be careful what she says to him knowing that the letters could put him in danger should Dacre or one of his men find them.

Dacre is on his way to take over Oath and hunt down Enva, the Skyward Goddess, and Iris, Attie, Forest, Sarah, Tobias, and Roman must find a way to stop him and bring him down.

I saw a lot of mixed reviews for this book, which I think is fairly common with sequels. I did still love this book although it is different from the first book. The first book had mystery to it, but was also heavier on the growing romance between Roman and Iris. While there was still a love story in Ruthless Vows, it wasn’t as prominent since Iris and Roman are apart for most of the book and trying to end the war/find their way back to each other. So I see why some people wouldn’t like it as much, but I think it’s just naturally what would happen given the storyline.

The ending, while beautiful, was bittersweet and I did cry! I will say it’s ultimately a happy ending, but I wish it was just a tad bit happier and if you’ve read the book you can probably guess what I think would’ve made it happier!

Also, am I the only one that would love a book following Attie and Tobias?!

Read this series if you want a beautiful, magical, YA fantasy romance with the slow burn and rivals to lovers tropes.
