Book Review: Adriana

I was recently sent historical fiction romance, Adriana, by Leslie Hachtel and really enjoyed it!

This historical romance follows Adriana and Robert. Adriana is a young, wealthy British woman who inherits all of her late father’s money and estate. She is now on the run after her stepmother tries to kill her for the money so she disguises herself as an old woman to gain passage as a cook (luckily she knows how to cook well as the cook she grew up with taught her a lot) on a ship bound for America. Robert, the ship’s captain, immediately piques her interest, but she must maintain her disguise.

The night before the ship reaches Virginia, Adriana allows herself to take her disguise off, properly bathe, and wear a pretty dress. It’s the middle of the night and the crew is all asleep after a night of drinking to celebrate a good voyage. She encounters her crush, Robert, who is drunk and half asleep. The two share a night of passion. The next morning, Robert is determined to find the beautiful young woman he spent the night with and figure out where she came from/where she went since he knows for a fact that no such woman was a passenger on his ship.

Will he realize the woman of his dreams is the “old” woman he got along with so well during the months at sea? Will Adriana’s past catch up with her if she reveals her identity to Robert?

This was a really entertaining read! The storyline was good and the characters were really likable. The chapters were short too so it made the book fly by and I almost wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the characters. Parts were a bit comical such as Adriana’s disguise that included an eye patch. And I was pleasantly surprised by the spice level as I wasn’t expecting it to be anything more than a bit of steam.

Overall, I really enjoyed this historical romance!
