Book Review: My Lucky Charm

I’ve read a few Courtney Walsh books over the past two years and they’re always cute and sweet romcoms so when I saw she was releasing one for St. Patrick’s Day and it was about Eloise Hart, the younger sister to Poppy from My Phony Valentine, I had to read it. The book is My Lucky Charm and follows Eloise and and Grayson Hawke.

The novel starts off on New Year’s Eve and Eloise is at a bar with some friends, having a fine time being the only single one there amongst her friends. But, when she sees her ex walk in with his girlfriend, she desperately doesn’t want him to see her and if he does see her she doesn’t want him to realize she’s there alone. Right before midnight, she approaches a guy who is alone at the bar and basically quickly tells him her cheating ex is here and would he kiss her at midnight so her ex doesn’t think she’s a loser. To her surprise, the guy does it and their kiss is explosive. But, then he leaves right after and she doesn’t think she’ll ever see this guy again.

Fast forward a couple weeks and she has accepts a job for the Chicago Comets, professional hockey team, where Poppy’s boyfriend, Dallas Burke, is a star player. They hire Eloise to be a personal assistant to their new player who was just traded from Philadelphia and help him acclimate to Chicago. He’s known to be really grumpy, but one of the best hockey players, so they are hoping Eloise can help him learn to love Chicago. The hockey player? Grayson Hawke. The guy she kissed on New Year’s Eve.

Eloise really needs this job to work out and Gray really does not want an assistant. The two have to learn to work with one another, while also trying to ignore their attraction to each other. Can Eloise help Gray loosen up a bit and find the joy of hockey again? Can Gray let people see that he’s not as grumpy/miserable as he likes to seem? And can the two resist their attraction and growing feelings for one another?

This book was really cute and I felt like I could relate to Eloise in so many ways! She doesn’t need a fancy life or high paying professional life, she just wants to do something she enjoys and what she really wants is to find love. She has a line about how she has this tendency to hope that every guy she meets/relationship she enters will be the one and I can relate to that so much. I also really liked Gray, even when he was grumpy. I found him likable and I liked seeing Eloise slowly wear him down. I do think that the character that stole the show was Scarlett though! No spoilers on who she is.

Read this if you want a sweet sports romcom that takes place between New Year’s and St. Patrick’s Day.
