Book Review: A Court of Sugar & Spice

Last Christmas I saw a few people talk about A Court of Sugar & Spice by Rebecca F. Kenney and how it’s a spicy Nutcracker retelling so I put it on my tbr. I read it for one of my holiday reads this season and just finished it earlier this week!

The novel follows sisters, Clara and Louisa. The two young women go to live with their godfather, Drosselmeyer, an eccentric inventor. His large house has toys like nutcrackers and his servants are automatons – an invention of his he says. When Louisa cuts herself and accidentally gets a drop of blood on one of the nutcrackers, he comes to life and tells her and Clara that he is a fae prince who has been abducted and cursed into the form of a nutcracker by Drosselmeyer who is actually a fae hunter! The two young women escape through a portal into the fae realm and together with the prince and his cousin, a Sugarplum fae, battle the Rat King’s army to get to the Unending Pool to free the prince from his curse.

This was a fun read. A lot of it was a bit cheesy especially the dialogue and spicy bits, but it was still a good time and entertaining. It’s not a book you have to think a lot about. You can just have a good time with it and the characters.

Read this if you want a spicy Nutcracker retelling.
