Book Review: The Songbird & the Heart of Stone

Have you started the Crowns of Nyaxia series by Carissa Broadbent? I’m a big fan. In the first two books in the series, Mische is one of the side characters and now she’s the fmc in this book, The Songbird & the Heart of Stone, which I’m happy about because I loved her in the previous books.

When the novel begins, we learn that Mische decided she wanted to go out on her own for a while especially after events that occurred in the previous book, The Ashes & the Star-Cursed King, and ended up being captured by the House of Shadow. She is about to be executed when Asar, the bastard son of the Shadowborn king and wraith warden, stops the execution and convinces his father that he needs Mische for a task he’s been sent on by Nyaxia, a goddess.

Before Mische was turned into a vampire, she was a priestess for the God of the Sun, Atroxus. Asar needs Mische’s powers of light to help him on his journey to the Underworld to collect relics in order to resurrect Nyaxia’s husband. Mische is willing to help, although her powers are extremely limited since she became a vampire, but when she is visited by Atroxus saying he will forgive her for her sin of being a vampire if she resurrects Alarus, but then she must kill him. What will Mische do? She wants to be forgiven by Atroxus, but she has formed a bond with Asar and does not want to betray him either.

I loved this book. I loved Mische in the first two books and I loved her even more in this book. The characters are great and the journey through the Underworld was an adventure for sure. And Asar is one of the best book boyfriends I’ve had in a while. He’s the warden of the wraiths in purgatory and the Underworld and his body is scarred. You would think he’d be a scary, cold person, but he’s actually a total cinnamon roll! I love Asar so much. He is strong, protective, and extremely supportive. I need him and Mische to have an amazing ending!

I’m happy we don’t have to wait long for the next book. It comes out this summer!
