The Top Signs Your Home Needs Immediate Maintenance

You’re never done taking care of your home and giving it the attention that it needs. Whether due to extreme weather, general wear and tear, or otherwise, it’s always important to be ready with the repairs and replacements vital to maintaining your home. However, some tasks are going to be a lot more urgent than others. Here, we’re going to look at the signs that there’s a problem you need to take care of right away.

Dripping Faucets

Aside from being an annoyance, a dripping faucet can waste hundreds of gallons of water each year, even if it’s a slow one. Aside from a major drain on your water bill, it could also be an indication that your faucet is in need of a part replacement, usually a seal or a washer. This problem might be due to high water temperature, which can continue to cause malfunctions if you don’t address it. Take care of the faucet, first, then see if there are any underlying issues that also need your attention.

Peeling Paint

If the paint is peeling off your walls, it’s rarely because the paint itself is failing and fading. There’s usually an underlying issue. The more common is that humidity has penetrated the wall, weakening the bond between the paint and the surface that it’s on. This could be the indication of poor ventilation in a room, or worse yet, a leak from either the rain or a pipe in the house. This moisture buildup can go on to cause a host of other issues, like mold, mildew, and even damage to the structural materials of the home. Beyond repainting the affected surface, be sure to look beneath for signs of the cause.

Strange Odors

There are quite a few potential causes of strange odors in the home. If it’s a persistent and musty smell, it’s likely to be mold or mildew, caused by the spread of dampness through the property. However, if the smell is stronger and more rancid than that, it could be pointing to a sewer line problem. Damaged plumbing pipes can be highly unhealthy for the family, causing serious health risks, and should prompt you to get a sewer line replacement as soon as possible. Another possibility is pest infestation, which we’ll look at next.

Pest Infestation

Aside from strange odors in the home, there are other signs that you might have a pest problem in the home. Droppings in the home, gnaw marks on wood or other furniture, and stray scraps of material that could be for nests could all be pointing to a pest infestation, whether it’s rodents, termites, or ants. Calling for a pest control team, and then protecting the home by sealing up the gaps that these animals exploit can help you safeguard your home once again.

Cracked Foundation

Any crack in your foundation is worth a serious look. Even if a small crack poses no immediate threat, it could widen and eventually threaten the structural strength of the entire home. There are many causes of foundation cracks, from soil movement due to nearby construction work, water infiltration, roots growing into the home, and so on. Whatever the case, it’s important to get in touch with a foundation repair team. Otherwise, you could start to see uneven flooring, cracks in your wall, or even complete structural failure. Early intervention is the key.

Sagging Roof

When you’re outside your home, does it look like your roof is beginning to sag a little? While a damaged, chipped, or missing tile can be replaced, if the roof is sagging, this suggests a structural failure within. Left alone, it could very well collapse over time. This is usually due to water damage from leaks that haven’t been fixed, excess weight from snow or other debris, or simply because your roof materials have aged out of effectiveness. You will want to get a roofing specialist up there to take a look and see whether it’s a minor issue that could be fixed or if you’re likely to need a roof replacement.

Slow Drains

If the water in your bathroom takes a while to drain, it might not seem like a big deal. Use some drain cleaner and it could clear up, right? A clogged pipe at the surface might be easy to deal with but, if that’s not that simple, it could be an issue deeper in the system. A buildup of hair, grease, and other debris can restrict water flow, causing slow drainage at first and, eventually, flooding. If there’s more than one drain that’s slow, then it’s an indication of a sewer line problem which, again, you need to fix ASAP.

Flickering Lights

A flickering light could well be a sign of a light that’s about to need a replacement. However, it could be a sign of something more serious going on under the surface, such as loose wiring, overloaded circuits, or faulty lighting fixtures. Electrical issues are serious and could escalate into a fire risk if not handled properly. If your light is flickering even after you have changed the bulb, get in touch with an electrician to replace any faulty components and even upgrade your electrical panel if necessary.

High Energy Bills

Given that most of us are in the dead of winter at the moment, a higher energy bill than usual might not be too unexpected. However, if you notice a very sudden spike without a clear cause, then there’s likely a major source of energy inefficiency. This is often due to new faults in major appliances like fridges and TVs, or due to HVAC systems that are starting to show their age. With the help of an electrician who can provide an energy audit, you can get to the bottom of the issue.

With the tips above, you should make sure that you’re ready to jump into action. The longer you tend to leave these issues, the greater your chances of sustaining highly costly damage. Get ready to ensure that you’re able to act on any of these issues.
