Book Review: Maybe Meant to Be

Happy Friday! My school had a snow day yesterday due to ice so I had off, but unfortunately I have been sick so I was pretty out of it yesterday. I took today off work too because I wasn’t doing any better last night, but I’n hoping today I’ve got a bit more energy and not feeling horrible all day.

I was supposed to finish this book, Maybe Meant to Be, two nights ago but then started to get sick. Then, it took me pretty much all day yesterday to finish the last chapter. That’s how poorly I felt. But, I eventually did finish it just in time to type this up.

Two summers ago I read K.L. Walther’s The Summer of Broken Rules and it was one of my favorite reads. So I’ve been wanting to read more by her and just haven’t until now. Maybe Meant to Be is her first novel and follows Sage Morgan and Charlie Carmichael. The two are high school seniors at the Bexley School – a boarding school – and have been best friends since they were born. They are inseparable and everyone from their classmates to their parents and family friends think they are meant to be and will eventually get together and get married. But no one knows that Sage and Charlie’s twin brother, Nick, actually have feelings for one another or that Charlie, who is known to have a constant revolving door of girlfriends, actually has feelings for the new boy in school, Luke.

I loved this book and following Sage, Charlie, Nick, and Luke. It’s a great coming of age novel about love, friendships, and figuring out who you are amidst the expectations people have for you. Parts of it made me emotional – like when Charlie felt like he couldn’t be his true self or Sage having to put her own feelings and wants on the back burner to protect her best friend. I did feel like some of these issues were really drawn out, which is the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars on Goodreads.

The Summer of Broken Rules is still my top K.L. Walther so far, but this one was really good too.

Read this if you want a YA coming of age romcom with friends to lovers and a boarding school setting.
