Livraria Bertrand – Chiado

Last Monday my family and I took the train from Porto to Lisbon for the second half of our vacation. After checking in to the house we were renting, we immediately did 2 things in our Chiado neighborhood – went for chocolate cake at Landeau (will post about this in a pastries and sweets on vacation post later) and went to Livraria Bertrand. The Chiado location of this bookstore is the oldest active bookstore in the world! I first heard about Livraria Bertrand and how it’s the oldest in the world from Instagram and knew I had to visit.

I didn’t end up buying a book, but I did get a tote bag!

If you buy a book here, they ask if you want them to stamp the inside with the Livraria Bertrand stamp which is cool!

Over the past few years when I’ve traveled I’ve tried to go to popular or interesting bookstores in that destination. 2 years ago I was in Portland so I, of course, had to go to Powell’s and last year in Iceland I went to a popular chain, Penninn Eymundsson. In Portugal I went to Livraria Lello and now Bertrand. I hope to be able to keep it up in future travels!
