Book Review: Soul Searching

I had heard good things about Lyla Sage’s Soul Searching and I enjoyed her Rebel Blue Ranch series so I was looking forward to checking out this book – her first in the Sweetwater Peak duology. I saved it for now to read because it is a paranormal romance. I just finished it a few days ago and I loved it so much more than I was expecting to!

The novel follows Collins Cartwright and Brady Cooper. Collins and her twin sister, Clarke, have grew up in the tiny town of Sweetwater Peak, Wyoming. Their parents own an antique shop and the twins have been able to see and talk to ghosts since they were little. But, something isn’t right and Collins hasn’t been able to communicate with any ghosts for a while now. As a result, she feels like her work as a professional photographer has suffered from her spiritual blockage. She decides to go home to Sweetwater Peak and hopefully figure out what’s wrong. Collins loves her family, but does not want to stay with her parents or her sister so Clarke arranges for her to stay in the extra bedroom at Brady’s place above his upholstery shop and to help him out at his shop.

Brady has lived in Sweetwater Peak for about a year after leaving his city life. He needed a change in his life and a series of photos in a magazine of the small town drew him to the area. Little did he know that he eventually would have Collins staying and working with him and that he would be instantly drawn to her and attracted to her. And likewise, Collins who is normally very private, finds it easy to confide in Brady. Maybe he is the key to solving her communication problem with the ghosts.

I loved this book. It is a little eerie, because of the way Lyla Sage writes the small, ghost filled, town, but it wasn’t scary which is good because I do not like scary books. I loved Collins and Brady and I really appreciated the fact that Brady knew he liked Collins and was up front about it and there weren’t any games. It was a nice change and just felt really mature.

I’m looking forward to reading the second book about Clarke and Leith! It just released, but my immediate tbr is bursting at the seams so hopefully I can read it soon!

Sidenote: how cute is my tee from Inkwell Threads? I thought it was the perfect tee for this book since it’s got that cute ghost sleeping with the “How to be Scary” book in its hand since the ghosts in the novel aren’t scary or malevolent.

Read this if you want a paranormal romance with the forced proximity trope.
