If you work in an office or school like me or anywhere with a copy machine I’m sure you know the all too familiar feeling of frustration when the photocopier is just not working. It tends to always happen at the worst possible time, naturally. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to make copies for my students and the copier jams. Then, you follow all the steps on the little screen to try to unjam the copier and maybe it works. For a minute. Another copy will print out and then jam again. If you’re lucky, it’ll unjam for good (for good meaning until you’re done with your copies) and you can go on your merry way just slightly behind schedule.
This is what would typically happen to me. The copier starts beeping that there’s a jam. I follow the directions on the screen and thank god for the pictures they show or else I’d have no idea what I was doing! Not that I really know anyway. The directions are always things like “Turn A counter clockwise”. Then, “Push B down”. “Click C back in place”. You might find a paper in there that you can pull out, which will hopefully be the culprit, but you never know if that’s the only issue. And the worst is when you pull the paper and it rips and you can’t get the paper out! If I’ve got the time and I’m feeling determined, I’ll keep trying to figure out what the problem is. But sometimes, you’re short on time or it’s just not working so you’ve got to give up and hope the next person doesn’t absolutely hate you for jamming the printer.
In the past two years, the IT department – which is who we report copier issues to – has told us not to try to fix the copier ourselves but to let them know or fill out a ticket if there’s a problem. I guess too many people who tried to take it upon themselves to fix the copiers have done more harm than good. Hopefully I’m not one of them! That’s fine and all to have other people fix the copiers, but who knows how long that will take or when they’ll even get around to it!
It is honestly the worst. There are times when I dread making copies and I’m thrilled that most of the school work I assign is digital. But sometimes there’s just no way around it. Copies need to be made. And being a teacher, I always give tests on paper and don’t allow the kids to take my tests on their computers because ya know – cheating. You may not be a teacher, but I’m sure you can relate to my photocopier woes.
