Real Talk: Can You Shrink Your Pores?

No skincare talk is ever complete without the mention of pores. The beauty advice is always the same: minimize the pores to avoid the dreadful zits and get that flawless, smooth skin.

But let’s take a step back first and check the scientific facts. Can you really shrink those tiny openings on your skin?

A Primer on Pores
The simple truth is that you can never reduce the size of pores. These minute holes play a big role in keeping your skin healthy. They’re essentially the openings of hair follicles, which allow the oils produced from the sebaceous glands at the dermis to reach the surface of the epidermis, the skin’s outer layer.

In other words, pores help make your skin moisturized and supple. Moreover, they prevent overheating, as they release sweat and let the body cool off. Pores are just as important as any organ in the body.

Now, another thing you should know about these tiny openings is that they vary in sizes. If you think your spouse or roommate has smaller pores than yours, there’s a good chance that you’re not imagining things. There’s no single answer as to why some have larger or tinier ones, but genetics definitely plays a part.

Pimples can be culprits, too. They may stretch out the small holes and therefore, make them look bigger. That’s why as much as you can, avoid the zits. Exposure to the sun’s UV rays causes the breakdown of collagen, too, the protein that keeps the pores tight. So when you’re frequently under the sun, make sure to apply sunblock.

The Proper Skincare

Even though you can’t reduce the size of your pores, there are lots of ways to deal with them. For one, you can prevent them from expanding further. As mentioned above, keep the pesky pimples at bay.

Your best strategy for this is the simple cleansing routine. Follow the three-step ritual: wipe off your makeup and other impurities, clean your face with lukewarm water, and then apply non-fragrant, alcohol-free cleansers and toners, according to your skin type.

If you’re struggling with zits already, ask your dermatologist in Provo for effective acne treatment. Doctors often recommend retinol creams, but of course, fixes should still be based on your unique skin type and condition.

Beyond the pimple prevention, make sure to slather some good sunscreen as well, as UV exposure can cause pores to become larger. Use SPF 30 or higher and apply it every three hours.

Another approach to pores is to hide them. Before you put on your makeup, use a primer. This provides a good base, particularly filling in the pores. As for your foundation, find a formula that has oil-controlling properties. Avoid those that contain emulsifiers, as these can easily clog pores. These two products are usually enough already, but if you want to really seal that smooth-looking skin, use a double-wear concealer.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to make the size of your pores smaller. But there are ways to hide them and keep them from looking larger. Take care of your skin to keep it healthy and gorgeous-looking.
