Sometimes a roof can naturally reach the end of its useful life without experiencing a roof failure. It will just look old and worn. Don’t wait until the water is pouring through the ceiling, and you have to break out the buckets to pay attention to your roof.

For the most part, when it comes to having your roof replaced, there are several signs that you can look out for which will tell you if this is indeed something that needs to be done as soon as possible. Here are the top signs which will tell you when you need a new roof.

Unwanted Growth

If you notice that moss, mildew, or algae seem to be growing on your roof, then this can be a sign of problems. It will start as something which looks like it is just coating the top of your shingles, and you may not think much of it at first.

However, if it grows, it can trap moisture underneath the shingles, and this will cause quite a bit of damage. Even if the growth does not reach as far as to grow between roof and shingles, it can still start underneath the shingles. If moss has been allowed to grow for too long under your roof, it can easily weigh down on the shingle layers enough to cause structural damage.

Excessive Rot

Excessive rot will start occurring when the shingles wear out. The first action to take at this point is to have a roofer come and inspect your roof. Let them check how bad it is. This way, you can be sure that your knowledge about the rot is correct.

Typically, when a few of the shingles wear out badly enough, the decay will spread to other areas of the roof, and as it does this, it gets worse. It is much better to get a professional opinion about what you should do than guess your way through this problem. Once you know how bad your roof is, then you can make an appropriate decision on whether you will repair or replace it.

Leaks

Of course, if there are leaks on your roof, that is a pretty good indicator that something needs doing. Leaks can begin for several different reasons, and not all of them mean that you need to get the roof replaced immediately. But when they do show up, this is always a good idea to think about.

Cracks and Buckles on the Roof After a Storm

After storms, you should be looking at your roof to see if there are any cracks or other signs of trouble that have appeared because of Mother Nature’s wrath. If there are, then you will need to get these problems fixed as soon as possible.

In conclusion, you should be looking at your roofing materials now and again to see any problems you can notice. This will allow you to better feel for whether or not your roof needs replacing or if it just needs some repairs done here and there.
