Feel Ashamed About Your Hearing? Here’s How To Beat The Feeling

What happens to us physically can affect us mentally, and vice versa. That’s why emotions like shame crop up when we have to deal with a long term, chronic health issue.

For people with hearing loss and hearing issues, a feeling of shame can be quite common. It can make you want to turn away from a social life and only communicate with people you know are willing to repeat themselves – these people can be few and far between.

However, you should never let that feeling of shame win. Hearing loss isn’t something to lock behind a door and try to cope with. It’s something you can live life to the full with! If you want to beat the feeling, here are three things to keep in mind.

Rewire Your Mindset

You shouldn’t be ashamed of something you can’t help. Hearing loss can be exacerbated by the way we live our lives, but it’s never something that should be considered as being someone’s fault. Focusing on this concept can make it a lot easier to beat back the shame around the difference in your hearing level.

Reach Out for Medical Help

It’s easy for shame to become a commonplace feeling. Once you’ve got it, it feels like it’s never going to go away. However, convincing yourself of this takes the power out of your hands. For those with hearing loss who feel left out and like they annoy the people around them, there’s always something practical that can be done.

A common form of hearing loss is tinnitus, which leads to a constant ringing and/or buzzing in the ear. With a proper treatment plan, it doesn’t have to drown out everything else you could hear for the rest of your life.

You can ask your audiologist about tinnitus treatment therapy, even if you’re already being treated with hearing aids. This could lead to a treatment plan that involves sound therapy, which helps your brain to discard the ringing and only focus on noises outside of the ear. Your approach to your medical plan is up to you, and your doctors are here to support that!

Head Outside

There’s only one way to show yourself that being ashamed of hearing loss is wrong: giving the alternative a chance! The outside world has a lot to offer someone who needs hearing help, even when it feels totally hostile towards you.

If you like, you can start with quiet places like libraries and local bakeries, where the noise level is low and you only have to speak occasionally. You can then build from there, but make sure to take it slow so you don’t get overwhelmed. Once you’ve tried out a few new social situations, you’ll see what we mean. Indeed, you’re much more likely to enjoy them than you believe right now!

If you feel shame over your hearing, imagine putting the emotion in a box and then crushing it down. You can beat what you feel!
