Book Review: The Folklore of Forever

I was a big fan of Sarah Hogle’s Old Flames & New Fortunes so I was excited to read her 2nd Moonville book, The Folklore of Forever. This novel follows Romina’s middle sister, Zelda, and the quirky Morgan Angelopoulos, who was also met in the first book.

Zelda is a popular author, but after finishing the last book of her series has been having trouble coming up with ideas for a new book. After spending years moving around from place to place, she’s finally back home with her sisters in their magical small town, Moonville. Everyone in town believes in magic and many people believe they have magical abilities including her sisters and niece. They Tempest girls believe themselves to be witches and learned many things from their late grandmother. Zelda used to believe too, but after some bad experiences when she was younger, she has become a skeptic and thinks they’re all delusional.

Morgan works for the local paper and is often at the Tempest sisters’ store, taking up residence at a desk near the window to work. He is quirky and charming and loves all things magic, though he has no abilities himself. When Zelda starts to see some odd looking animals around town – animals that look ordinary to everyone else’s eyes – she indulges Morgan’s desire to go looking for the mythical Black Bear Witch in the woods to see if they can find some answers. Will they find the witch? Will Zelda start believing again? Will her and Morgan finally get together after their playful flirting over the past months?

I really enjoyed this book and all the magical-ness of it all. Zelda was really likable and as zany as Morgan was, I really liked him too! Their silliness together was infectious and so cute. The only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars on GoodReads is because I felt like there were some little things left unexplained, but I suppose the main purpose of the book is about Zelda’s growth and development.

Sarah Hogle’s next book hasn’t been announced yet, but I’m hoping she will write a 3rd Moonville book about Luna, the eldest Tempest sister!
