Book Review: Savor It

Tarah DeWitt has quickly become an autobuy author for me ever since I read and loved Funny Feelings earlier this year. I’ve loved everything I’ve read by her so far. Savor It is no exception.

Savor It follows Sage Byrd and Fisher Lange. Sage lives in the small town of Spunes, Oregon and loves her life there with her friends and family, but feels like she can’t catch a break lately. Her long-time boyfriend broke up with her abruptly the year before and immediately started dating an old friend of hers who just moved home and promptly got engaged. She is tired of people feeling sorry for her and desperately wants a win.

Fisher Lange is a award winning chef in New York City, but after a rough few years in his career where he felt uninspired and lost a Michelin star, his boss sends him to consult on her upcoming restaurant in Spunes. She wants him to help oversee the opening of the restaurant, create the menu, and win over the townspeople who are not too thrilled about this new restaurant opening in what they view as an eyesore of a building. Fisher is also the guardian to his teenage niece, Indy, and feels like he has no idea what to do with her.

When an encounter between Fisher and Sage at the library makes it looks like they’re dating, they decide to lean into it and help each other out. If people think they’re a couple, Sage will stop getting pitying looks from people and can throw her hot new boyfriend in the faces of his ex and his fiancée. And, Fisher agrees to train with Sage and be her partner for the competition in the town’s festival. In exchange, Sage will help Fisher integrate himself into the town and win the people over. Plus, she’ll help him with Indy. Their feelings for each other are evident, but Fisher is only supposed to be in Spunes for the summer. Will the two pursue something anyway?

I loved the storyline, Fisher, and Sage. This is sort of fake dating since it’s how the premise begins, but the two are very honest about their attraction and feelings for one another from the beginning so I don’t know if it really counts as fake dating. Regardless, I loved how honest and raw the two of them were with each other. It wasn’t always perfect and at times their feelings and situations were messy, but it was very real and I loved it.

Read this if you want a spicy small town romance with the fake dating trope.
