Book Review: The Undercutting of Rosie & Adam
Last year Megan Bannen came out with the 3rd and final book in the Hart & Mercy series, The Undercutting of Rosie & Adam. I have loved this quirky paranormal romcom series and this book is no exception. If you don’t know, the first book was The Undertaking of Hart & Mercy and the second book was The Undermining of Twyla & Frank.

The novel follows Rosie Fox and Adam Lee. Rosie is an immortal demigod and Tanrian Marshall. She’s been alive for a long time and every time she gets killed or accidentally dies, she just comes back to life. It’s getting tiring and she is starting to feel really stuck in life. Of course, she didn’t think wanting a change in her life would come in the form of mysterious shadowy thorns and vines sprouting up all over the place in Tanria, damaging the portals that visitors and marshalls like herself need to use to travel back and forth between home and the Mist.
Dr. Adam Lee, the inventor of the portals, comes to see if he can fix the portals and figure out what is wrong with them. Rosie and Adam met once a few years ago and while they interacted very little back then, they both left lasting impressions on the other, although neither would admit that. Now they are going to have to spend more time together to figure out what is going on. And of course, that “more time together” takes on a whole new meaning when they two end up trapped in the Mist with Rosie’s friends and exes themselves, Duckers and Zeddie. Now the group needs to find a way to fix the portals and get back home before the mysterious thorns take over everything.
I really liked this book and getting to know Rosie and Adam so much more in this book. The storyline was really interesting and both characters go through a lot of growth during their adventure. Their slow burn was adorable and I liked how the novel made a point to challenge stereotypical gender characteristics. Rosie is a very tall, strong, demigod badass at I think 6’5 or 6’7 and Adam is a strong, intelligent, quiet man who is more than a foot shorter than Rosie but it doesn’t bother either of them and I loved that.
I’m sad that this is the last planned book for the Tanria universe, but I’ll always look back fondly at this series! Read this if you want a paranormal romcom with a little bit of spice and the slow burn trope.
