Tearjerker Movies – Part 2

Over 2 years ago I wrote a post about a few movies that, without fail, will always make me cry. Although it was written back in 2016, it still gets consistent views today – as do some of my other movie posts so I guess I need to write more of those! My last post on tearjerker movies included Hachi, Stepmom, My Girl, Beaches, and Letters to Juliet. I thought it was time to do a round 2!

This time around I have a mix of old and new movies. I’m talking about really old – before I was born, in to my childhood, and then within the past 2 years.

First up, The Sound of Music. Everyone loves The Sound of Music right?! I know I do. Usually I see it on tv around the holidays but I haven’t seen it this year.

This is going to sound weird, but one of my favorite kind of movies are the kind that something heartbreaking happens (only in terms of love, not like death or something) and even though you know they’re going to get back together in the end you have that aching feeling in your chest and a pit in your stomach. It’s weird, but I like it! Anyway, I always feel like that when Maria leaves and then when she returns!

Moving on to my elementary school days. A movie I loved as a kid, but would always make me cry, is Harriet the Spy. I thought it was so sad how she just wanted to “investigate” and always thought she was helping people out but things always backfired. People always thought she was too nosy and it would cause her a lot of trouble. I always cried when her friends were mad at her and when Rosie O’Donnell, her nanny, leaves.

Later on when I was in high school (I think) The Polar Express came out. Everyone still talks about this movie at Christmas time today. In fact, I had a bunch of students just this year that wanted to watch it before winter break in class. But I always avoid the movie because I think the ending is so sad! Spoiler Alert: In the movie little kids can hear the bells because they still believe in the magic of Christmas. It’s revealed at the end that the main character’s friends eventually can’t hear the bell anymore and the bell even falls silent for his little sister. Cue the waterworks!

Now, let’s move to more current movies. The Greatest Showman isn’t necessarily a sad movie although there are sad moments. But, what I get emotional over is some of the songs! Especially “A Million Dreams” – that song alone will make me tear up! The song starts off when Hugh Jackman’s character is a young boy and then transitions to him as an adult and becomes a duet with his wife.

Last, A Quiet Place, was one of my favorite movies last year. I watched it on my flight back home from Hong Kong. At first, I wasn’t sure if I should watch it on the plane because I might get scared, but it was so good. I won’t get in to too much detail in case you haven’t seen it yet, but I cry when John Krasinki’s character signs to his daughter that he has always loved her and starts screaming. If you’ve seen the movie you know what scene I’m talking about! I started crying, in the dark, on the plane (it was night time and the cabin lights were out) with my face lit up by my screen. When I watched it for the 2nd time when I was home I cried again!
