Did you know that the kitchen can be the most dangerous room in the house? Recent statistics show that this is where the majority of household accidents and injuries occur. Most of the time, these accidents occur because the individual who is cooking isn’t paying enough attention to what they are doing or their kitchen isn’t set up for optimum safety. Obviously, this needs to change if you have young children in your household who could be injured next time they are in the kitchen.

To make sure you don’t have to worry about a potential kitchen SOS, here are some great safety tips you should follow when preparing food.

Turn Pot Handles Away From The Edge Of The Stove
When you are cooking anything on the stove, it is critical that the handles aren’t pointing over the edge of it. Otherwise, you might knock a handle and the pan’s contents could fall onto you. Things could end up even worse if a child were to try to grab a handle and the contents fall onto them. If you use any of the best stone frying pans of 2019, you will no doubt already know just how heavy they are, so it’s understandable that these are going to hurt if they fall onto you! The best way to prevent this is to make sure that the handles are always turned away from the edge of the stove. That way, no one will knock or grab them.

Put Child Locks Onto Cupboards And Drawers
I’m sure that there are lots of other kitchen tools and equipment that you don’t want your kids getting hold of. For instance, your child could end up in danger if they get hold of a large kitchen knife. One way to make sure they don’t get hold of anything that they shouldn’t is to put child locks onto every cupboard and drawer. Your kids won’t be able to go through everything when you aren’t around to supervise.

Store All Food Correctly
Did you know that thousands of people end up suffering from food poisoning because of their poor food management at home? It’s true. Individuals keep foods at the wrong temperature, mix up cooked and raw meats, and don’t store leftovers how they should. So, first things first, you need to make sure that you always store food and ingredients in the temperature mentioned on the storage instructions. It is also essential that you keep raw and cooked meats separate at all times. Keep your cooked meat on a shelf above raw meat – if you store them the other way around, the juices from the raw meats could drip onto the cooked meat below. Make sure all leftovers go away into the fridge as soon as they are cool. Ideally, they need to be eaten within a couple of days.

Wash Hands Regularly
Don’t forget to wash your hands before you start to cook, no matter what kind of ingredients you are working with. You also need to wash your hands again after handling raw meat. If you don’t, then you could be spreading bacteria and germs around the kitchen. It is absolutely essential that you wash your hands in between handling raw and cooked meats. In fact, if you handle any cooked food after handling uncooked food, it is always highly advisable to clean your hands to prevent the spread of bacteria.

Invest In A Fire Extinguisher
A fire extinguisher is a good investment for any kitchen. Even if you do your best to prevent a fire in your kitchen, accidents can still happen. So, you need to have some way to stop the spread of any flames. As well as a fire extinguisher, it is also highly advisable to invest in a fire blanket as well. This can be laid over the fire and will put out any flames that it covers.

Always Tie Hair Back
Generally speaking, it is always recommended to not cook in loose clothing. That’s because this could end up in the pan without you realizing it! As well as this, loose hair also poses a risk. It could end up burning if you bend over the stove, but there is also the chance of some stray hairs ending up in the food that you cook. Trust me, your diners won’t enjoy pulling one of your hairs out of their meal!

Following these tips should help you cut down on the number of accidents that occur in your kitchen in the future!
